What Is Breathwork and How Does It Help Your Nervous System?
A simple explanation of breathwork and how it helps regulate your nervous system, reduce stress, and support emotional wellbeing.
Breathwork is an ancient practice that has been used for centuries to support the body, the mind, and our emotional wellbeing, and for me it’s one of the most powerful ways to come back into yourself.
At its core, it’s simply becoming aware of your breath, but when you start to do that, you realise how deeply connected your breath is to how you feel. Most of us move through life breathing unconsciously, and when we’re stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious, our breath naturally becomes shallow without us even noticing. Over time, this keeps the body in a constant state of stress.
This is where breathwork becomes so powerful, because through guided breathing you can begin to shift your nervous system out of that stress response and into a more calm and regulated state, which is where the body starts to feel safe again.
But it’s not just about relaxation. What I see time and time again is that breathwork brings awareness to what’s been sitting underneath, whether that’s unprocessed emotions, tension held in the body, or patterns you’ve been repeating without fully understanding why.
This is why I often combine breathwork with inner child work, because so much of what we experience now, especially in our relationships, comes from earlier experiences, and when you begin to breathe into the body and bring awareness to those parts of yourself, things start to shift in a really natural way.
You feel calmer, more connected, less reactive, and more secure within yourself, and from that place your relationships begin to change too, because you’re no longer responding from the same patterns.
Breathwork is about creating space for your body to release, process, and come back into balance in its own way, and when your nervous system feels safe, everything else starts to follow.

Why Do I Feel Anxious in Relationships?
Why Do I Feel Anxious In Relationships? | ÁNALÚ
If you’ve ever found yourself asking why you feel so anxious in relationships, you’re not alone, and it’s something I see and hear so often. You might notice yourself overthinking, needing reassurance, feeling unsure where you stand, or becoming very aware of the other person’s behaviour, even when everything seems fine on the surface.
What’s important to understand is that this isn’t random, and it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. What’s actually happening is that your nervous system is responding based on what it has learned feels safe, often shaped by earlier experiences where there may have been inconsistency, lack of emotional support, or a feeling of not being fully secure.
So when you enter into a relationship, your system naturally starts scanning for safety, and this can show up as overthinking, needing reassurance, feeling unsettled when there’s distance, or even trying to stay in control so you don’t get hurt. While it can feel overwhelming, it’s actually your body trying to protect you in the only way it knows how.
The challenge is that these patterns, which may have once kept you safe, can start to create distance in your relationships, making it harder to fully relax, trust, and open up to real connection.
This is where the work becomes so important. Through breathwork and inner child work, you can begin to understand where these responses come from, how they live in your body, and why they continue to show up, and from that awareness, things begin to shift naturally.
You start to feel more grounded, more settled within yourself, and more secure in how you show up in relationships, and instead of relying on someone else to make you feel safe, that sense of safety begins to come from within you. From that place, you can experience relationships in a completely different way, one that feels calmer, more connected, and more aligned with who you truly are.
If this resonates with you, this is exactly the work I support you with.
